How are you celebrating

Labor Day?

I had this funny feeling - and it kept nagging at me. After about the fourth time of wondering, I decided to check. Had I really written the Monday Morning Inspiration this week? I mean it’s Labor Day after all, surely I would have written it way ahead of time. But I couldn’t remember. Thank goodness for funny feelings. It had not been written.

Y’all deserve a little inspiration, even on a holiday, so it’s Saturday and I am writing a little hope for you. September's theme is Resilience. I love the idea of resilience- silly putty, taffy, balloons, brand new hair ties and headbands.
They’re strong yet supple, and bounce back with force and grace. Resilience is a beautiful thing.

How’s yours? Mine, well, lately it’s been a little salt water taffy-ish. With the CoVid thing, and the recovery, and loving my work enough that it’s hard to stop….my resilience balloon is looking a little soggy and overblown. It's time to talk about how to create the resilience that our Body, Mind and Spirit need to bounce back with grace.

SELF-COMPASSION IS AN ESSENTIAL COMPONENT IN RESILIENCE

Consider these basic essentials for resilience:

Daily meditation. Now, if this feels like a lot, consider- if you ever wake up in the middle of the night, and choose to breathe and focus on your breath instead of worrying, you’re meditating. If you focus on your breath at a stop light, you’re meditating. Meditation is something you can do walking, washing dishes or when you first awaken in the morning. It becomes a way of life. Try noticing this week when you pause- and give yourself credit for “meditating.”
Feeding your body well. What foods make you feel strong and energetic? Try to add a few more of those this week. It’s probably not donuts or French fries. Fruit instead of sugar, water instead of soda. That’s a great start. Your body is your best friend. She will be with you until the very end. She fights for you, supports you and keeps you going the best she can through everything you want to do. Take some time and thank her with some good food.
Sleep. I love to stay up late watching screens as much as anyone. However; my experience has taught me that if I put the screens away 2 hours before I want to be asleep, I fall asleep much earlier and rest more deeply. Have you tried that? Just decide when you’d like to actually be asleep and then shut down your screens 2 hours before that. Tough, I know, but oh, so worth it for building resilience!

You are a strong, resilient woman already. I know because you read Monday Morning Inspiration. You care about your family, your work and your community. To keep doing that, it’s important to care about and for yourself.

Meditate every day (in some form) this week. Look at the clouds, take a deep breath, listen to music, appreciate the smell of cinnamon toast. Mindfulness heals. It creates resilience.

So, I decided to embrace my natural gray hair. I've been coloring my hair for 40 years, and it was way past time. After 4 months of growing out the red, my amazing hairdresser cut it all off, except for my bangs. They would have been too short. For 5 hours we tried to wash that red out. But like the habit that it is, with all of its mindsets and beliefs, it's gonna take awhile to grow out. Simply being me is a liberating change I intend to continue working on.

Just as we can create good in our lives, we can also create situations that are really, truly, not so good. Take your very creative, story telling, inner critic. Has she been active lately? The holidays are a time when my critic really gets going. How do your calm your inner critic? My first ‘go to’ is prayer. It's a brand new day, and I get to do anything I want to with it. Today is a new day- right? It’s the fresh beginning of a new week. A Gift. But do I really get to do anything I want with it? There a nagging objection there. I mean, I have appointments and commitments and promises to keep. Is what’s on my list what I want? If you are feeling heavy in life, maybe it’s time to look again at what you want. Your fundamental desires. Allow me to share a few of mine; maybe it will activate thoughts on some of yours.
